You’ve been there. I’m sure of it. The unsolicited bad advice.

You’re out walking your dog, minding your own business, mentally running through your to-do list. Your dog is a little ahead, stopping to sniff here and there, maybe pulling just a bit.

Man with head in hands

Too much advice can be overwhelming.

Out of nowhere, someone calls out:
“Who’s walking who? You need to show him who’s boss!”

Or perhaps your dog startles at someone appearing suddenly—barks, maybe lunges—and you hear:
“You need to get that dog under control!”

And then there’s my personal favorite: the well-meaning friend or family member who’s done a couple of classes and now has all the answers.
“They just need this tool. Works instantly. My dog’s like a different dog.”

Well-meaning? Often.
Helpful? Not usually.

Smile, say “thanks,” and keep walking.

Because here’s the thing: no one else knows the full picture. They don’t know your dog, your history, your goals, or what you’re already working on. And most importantly—you didn’t hire them for their professional opinion.

There is a lot of outdated—and frankly harmful—advice still circulating:

Please don’t do any of these things. They’re far more likely to make your situation worse.

If you wouldn’t take medical advice from a stranger at a bar, it’s worth asking why you’d take training advice from someone who doesn’t know your dog.

The Allure of the “Quick Fix”

Between unsolicited advice and social media promises of instant results, it’s no wonder people feel overwhelmed.

“Do this one thing and your problems disappear.”

It’s tempting. I get it.

But behavior change—whether in humans or dogs—takes time and consistency.

Those polished videos online? They don’t show the hours (or months) of training behind the scenes.

That dog walking perfectly at heel? That’s not a quick fix.
That dog who “stopped reacting” when the shock or prong collar went on? That’s not because the problem is solved—it’s because the behavior is being suppressed.

And when you remove the tool?

The underlying emotion is still there. Sometimes stronger. Sometimes with fewer warning signs.

That’s when people say a dog “bit out of nowhere.”

A lot of dogs will try to “disappear” when they don’t understand what’s being asked of them.

What’s Actually Going On

Behavior isn’t random.

If you put a dog in the same situation, you’ll often get the same response.

Change the situation, and you change the outcome.

Reinforce behaviors you want to see again, and they’ll happen more often.

That’s the foundation.

But when the goal is simply to stop a behavior, the common approach is to add something unpleasant. The dog learns to avoid the situation—not because they understand what to do, but because they’re trying to avoid the consequence.

That can lead to confusion, anxiety, and in some cases, what we call learned helplessness—where the dog stops trying altogether.

That’s not learning. That’s shutting down.

Why There Isn’t a Shortcut

We’re asking dogs to live in a human world that doesn’t come naturally to them.

Leashes. Busy streets. Visitors. Expectations about how to behave in situations they don’t fully understand.

It’s not fair to expect them to get it right without guidance—and then punish them when they don’t.

Good training isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about:

  • Preventing unwanted behaviors from being rehearsed
  • Teaching clear, alternative behaviors
  • Building confidence and understanding over time

And yes—it takes consistency.

A Better Way Forward

A good trainer isn’t going to give you a one-size-fits-all answer.

They’ll ask questions.
They’ll look at the whole picture.
They’ll help you set your dog up for success.

And they’ll do it in a way that’s humane, practical, and sustainable.

But even the best plan only works if it’s followed.

There’s no shortcut—but there is a path.

And if you stay on it, you’ll end up with something far better than a quick fix:
a dog who actually understands how to live in your world.
