Basic Manners for Real Life

Looking for a beginner-friendly dog obedience class in Rutland County or near Killington, Vermont? Basic Manners for Real Life is a foundational training program designed for dogs 20 weeks and older and the people who love them.

Whether your dog jumps on guests, pulls on the leash, ignores recalls, steals socks, or struggles to settle, this class focuses on the practical skills dogs need to succeed in everyday life — using modern, humane, rewards-based training methods.

(If you’ve just brought home a young puppy — congratulations! We strongly recommend enrolling puppies 12 weeks and under in our Puppy Start Right program while the critical socialization window is still open.)

Throughout the course, owners will learn essential training principles including marker or clicker training, reinforcement strategies, environmental management, and how dogs actually learn. We focus on real-life challenges commonly seen in adolescent and young adult dogs, helping owners build better communication, calmer behavior, and more reliable responses both at home and out in the world.

At Mountainside Mutts, we believe training should feel practical, supportive, and enjoyable for both dogs and humans. Our small class sizes and force-free approach help create a positive learning environment where dogs can build confidence without harsh tools or intimidation

Please note: This class is not suitable for aggressive, reactive, or severely fearful dogs, or females in heat. Proof of vaccinations (Distemper, Parvovirus, DHPP, and Rabies) is required prior to attendance.
